Dear Georg Jünger, a very apt cartoon. Yes, I agree with you. Hard Brexit it is. That was actually always my expectation because ideologues don‘t tend to make compromises, they push on regardless. That is what Johnson will do because maximum economic flexibility is a key part of the Brexit ideology. Without that there is no need for Brexit. The EU must protect the Single Market, but Johnson won‘t play by those fair playing field rules. Interestingly Michael Gove appeared to see the danger for the first time today when he said ‘We need a deal’. But I would not attach too much importance to his remarks. He is probably just preparing the ground for ‘It was the EU’s fault’ when the talks fail. Best wishes Grahame Lucas
Bin selber Ruderer und weiß: Man sieht am Riemen nicht, wohin die Reise geht – es sei denn man hat einen guten Steuermann. Der aber fehlt Johnson. Und da es ihm vor allem um sein Ego geht und sein Bild eines (längst vergangenen) starken Großbritanniens dürfte der Sturz mit Covid und hard Brexit im felsigen Wasserfall mit Bruch enden. Traurig, extrem teuer vor allem für Englands Mittel – und Unterschicht. Und dann kommen die Briten unter Labour zurück.
